Church for the whole Community
Church for the whole Community
For centuries St. Mary’s Church has been a much-loved part of Great Dunmow’s history, community and identity, where generations of people have gathered together to worship, celebrate, remember and meet.
Our ambitious project will ensure that the building continues to be at the heart of our community for generations to come. St. Mary's will still look and feel just as it always has. But behind the familiar stone walls, this project will make a real difference to how the building can be used.
Better access, improved facilities and a warmer, more welcoming environment will mean that more people can use St. Mary's, more often, whatever their age, ability or background.
This is more than a building project. It is an investment in the future of our community. This booklet gives details of our project and explains how you can help ensure St. Mary’s remains at the heart of the town for generations to come.
What will Change?
Step-free access
Making St. Mary's easier for everyone to enter and enjoy, from the main entrance, tower and chapel.
A warmer welcome
New glazed doors will help keep the warmth in while creating a welcoming entrance.
Refreshments and hospitality
A renewed servery will make it easier to welcome people, share refreshments and host community events.
Facilities for everyone
An accessible toilet will make the church more welcoming and usable for all.
A renewed tower
The tower mezzanine will be reinstated for our bell ringers, creating a versatile and accessible room beneath it.
A warmer, more comfortable church
Underfloor heating will be installed in the West End, alongside new flooring.
A renewed focal point
The font will be returned to a prominent position within the church.
How you can Help
The whole project will cost more than £500,000.
We are hugely grateful that much of this has already been secured, through a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the faithful generosity of our congregation over many years and a generous legacy.
Your gift will help us to complete this project.
Whether you worship at St. Mary's regularly, have attended an event here, have a family connection to the church, value its place in Great Dunmow, or simply want to help preserve an important part of our town’s heritage, you can make a difference.
Any gift, small or large will make a big difference. Please help us Build the Future of St. Mary’s.
How to Donate
We could not have reached this point without the generosity of our congregation over many years.
Now we are asking our church family and the wider Great Dunmow community to help us take the final step.
We’re able to reclaim 25 pence from every £1 given as part of the Government’s Gift Aid scheme at no cost to yourself.
If you have already completed a Gift Aid form there is nothing else for you to do.

How to Pray
We’re stepping out in faith and trusting that we will be able to complete this project by Easter 2027.
Please join us in praying for this project, for our church and for the wider community we serve.
Loving God,
we thank you for our church and all it means to us.
As we begin to Build the Future of St. Mary’s,
help us to trust you and follow your guidance.
Give us wisdom, generosity and faith
as we work together.
May our church continue to be a place of welcome, worship and hope.
Bless our wider community of Great Dunmow,
and help us to serve it well.
May all we do bring glory to you,
now and for generations to come.
Amen.
