Notices for the week beginning August 13

Welcome to our services today. If you are visiting us for the first time, do let us know. If you have children with you please don't feel embarrassed if they make a noise or if you need to go out at any time. At St Mary's there is a children's corner with toys and books, so please do make use of this if you would like to. There is a toilet in the church hall at St Mary's and at the back of church at St Andrew's.

General News for both parishes (unless stated)

Almighty God,
who didst look upon the lowliness
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
and didst choose her
to be the mother of thy only Son:
grant that we who are redeemed by his blood
may share with her
in the glory of thine eternal kingdom;
through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord,
who liveth and reigneth with thee,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

  • the family and friends of those who have recently died: Constance Eyre, Johannes Litjens, Dorothy Pelham, Lawrence Clayden
  • for those who have asked for prayer: James Warren
  • for those who are preparing for marriage: Dale Fuller & Charlotte Mottram
  • for those families preparing for the baptism of their children: Florence Barker
  • the Connect 120 Project and Tara Russell, our Missioner:
  • Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, through your Son Jesus you have reconciled to yourself all things on earth and in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.
Bless, we pray, the work of the Connect 120 project, that in our Churches, Schools and Communities this message of reconciliation, which you have entrusted to us, may be proclaimed effectively and received joyfully. Amen.

ST. MARY’S RIVERBANK. We have recently had three NCS students - James, Jack and Morgan - doing the community service part of their Citizenship course. With the help of their supervisors, they have cleared the undergrowth round the Riverbank walk. Please have a look if you have the time. They have done an excellent job for which we are very grateful.

ST MARY’S PATRONAL FESTIVAL. Today is our “Patronal Festival”, when we give thanks for the life and example of Mary and we give thanks too for the life of our church, dedicated in her name, to the service of God’s people. If you have an experience, memory or story about St Mary’s that you are particularly thankful for, please do come and offer your thanks in one of our services. If you have a photo, an object or a few words that you could write down that we could include as part of a “Thank You” display, then please do bring it along. It would be wonderful to build up a gallery of images and stories that express thanksgiving to God for the life of St Mary’s Church through the years.
A “Patronal Festival” is also a good excuse for a bit of a party! So, why not join us for a parish picnic in the Vicarage Garden from midday. Please do join us for this, whether or not you can make either of our morning services. If the weather is bad, we will have our picnic in church.

Finances: The PCC, guided by Nigel Dodd, reviewed the income and expenditure of St Mary’s and concluded that our expenditure is consistently higher than our income. This is clearly a situation that cannot continue and ways of reducing our outgoings/increasing our income were explored. Everyone in the church is encouraged to consider ways that we can raise more funds as without sufficient money, some of our planned outreach work in the community could be curtailed which would be very disappointing. Please feel free to discuss your ideas with any member of the PCC who will pass them back to the next meeting.
Safeguarding: Jenny Salisbury has now taken over the role of our Safeguarding representative with Ann Deakins as her deputy. Safeguarding ensures that our children and vulnerable adults are protected from harm; if you would like to know more or have any concerns please speak to Jenny or Ann. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jill Lloyd for her time and expertise as out-going Safeguarding Rep.

COUNTESS OF WARWICK SHOW 27 & 28 AUGUST 2017. This year the Countess of Warwick Country Show will be on Sunday 27th and Monday 28th August, and once again St Mary's Church will be running a tea and cake, and garden produce stall. Please see Elizabeth Dodd to sign up if you can help with making cakes, serving on the stall or erecting and dismantling tents. This is one of St Mary’s big fundraisers, so please help if you can!

CHURCH MICE NEWS. Gillian Warren and Helen Wright have offered to work together to co-ordinate Church Mice over the next year. They are both current helpers/volunteers with Church Mice. We are grateful to them both for offering their time and expertise in this way. However, this is only a short-term solution for Church Mice. We need to continue to identify other people who may be able to support Church Mice as co-ordinators and as volunteers so that this group may continue to flourish. If you would like to help in this way, please speak to Ruth. Thank you!

CAMEO - Come And Meet EveryOne. Please come and join us at our first get together at the Day Centre, Chequers Lane from 2.30 – 4 pm on Thursday, 14 September for a chat, a cup of tea and cake, all for £1. All welcome and to help break the ice and to get us all chatting, please bring along a childhood holiday photo to discuss. Don’t be on your own – come along and join in! OPPORTUNITIES FOR QUIET AND REFLECTIVE WORSHIP. Each week and month there are lots of opportunities to take part in worship that is quiet and reflective. Our evening services at St Andrew’s on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month provide a peaceful environment for those looking for calm away from the busyness of life. On Sunday 20th August at 6pm there will be a quiet and contemplative service of Holy Communion. Each week, Morning and Evening Prayer is said most days. This is a simple service of readings, psalms and prayers which lasts about 20 minutes. Days and times are listed overleaf under “The coming week”.All are welcome to all of these services; please do join us if you can!

QUIET DAY AT BOWLING GREEN: THURSDAY, 31 AUGUST - “GIVE US THE WINGS OF FAITH”. There are some places still available at the quiet day on 31 August led by Helen Flack. If you would like to book a place please contact Rosemary Drew on 01371 872662.
