Notices for the weeks beginning December 17 & 24

Welcome to our services. If you are visiting us for the first time, do let us know. If you have children with you please don't feel embarrassed if they make a noise or if you need to go out at any time. At St Mary's there is a children's corner with toys and books, so please do make use of this if you would like to. There is a toilet in the church hall at St Mary's and at the back of church at St Andrew's.

General News for both parishes (unless stated)

O Lord Jesus Christ, who at thy first coming didst send thy messenger to prepare thy way before thee: grant that the ministers and stewards of thy mysteries may likewise so prepare and make ready thy way by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that at thy second coming to judge the world we may be found an acceptable people in thy sight; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

  • for those who have asked for prayer: Bill; Alice; George Duncan; David Moore
  • those who are preparing for marriage, the blessing of their marriage or the renewal of marriage vows
  • for those families preparing for the baptism of their children
  • the Connect 120 Project and Tara Russell, our Missioner

  • INTERNAL POST. Please do not forget to check the pigeonholes at the back of Church by the South Door for any Christmas cards and other internal post, e.g. rotas, that may have been left for you. If you are not familiar with the pigeonholes, there is a space for each letter of the alphabet and post is arranged according to surname of recipient.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS AT ST MARY’S. During the Harvest season we asked you to nominate charities you would like our PCC to consider as part of our charitable giving this year. Each Christmas we nominate three charities to support through our Christmas Collections. Having looked through the nominations that we have received, our PCC has decided to incorporate two of the nominated charities into our Christmas Collection, alongside Crisis, the homeless charity. This year we will be supporting:
  • MIND in West Essex: a key provider of community based mental health services, with offices in Great Dunmow
  • CRISIS, the homeless charity
  • Tearfund: a Christian charity that helps communities around the world escape the very worst effects of poverty and disaster.
  • As ever, UK tax payers can increase the value of their gift by 25% by using the Gift Aid envelopes that we provide in the pews. Thank you very much for your support.

SUPPORTING UTTLESFORD FOOD BANK. If you would like to leave anything for our Christmas collection for Uttlesford Foodbank, please leave it in the box labelled ‘Foodbank’ at the back of Church by Sunday, 17 December. For full details of what to include please take a leaflet which can be found on the table by the South Door.

CHRISTMAS WISHES TREE. If you would like to extend Christmas wishes to all those who attend St. Mary’s, then please do so by hanging a gift tag/card on the trees by the font. If you would like to, please then make a donation to a charity of your choice of the money you have saved by not sending out individual cards. (Please supply your own gift tag or card to hang on the tree).

CHURCH FLOWERS. If anyone is interested in helping with the Christmas flowers in St Mary’s church, please speak to Barbara Caton on 01371 874043. Barbara will be arranging flowers on Friday, 21 December. Do not worry if you are not an experienced flower arranger; there are plenty of things that can be done to assist Barbara and she is more than happy to show you the basics of arranging the flowers if you would like.
If anyone would like to offer assistance to Barbara on a regular basis, please let her know.
There may be an occasion when you would like to dedicate an arrangement in church to a loved one in their memory or for a special occasion. If so, please give Barbara a call to discuss this or alternatively, complete a ‘Flowers request’ form (these can be found on the table by the south door) and hand to Caroline in the office. A donation towards the flowers would very much be appreciated.
General donations towards the flowers in church are always appreciated. Cheques should be made payable to St. Mary’s Flower Fund and can be left with Caroline in the office.

SIDESPERSON/CLEANING/COFFEE ROTAS. For various reasons we find ourselves very short of people to assist at all services with sidesperson/welcoming duties; to serve coffee at the 10.30 am services; to help with the church cleaning.
If you do not already help out in any of these areas, please could you think carefully about where you may be able to offer some help. The more people who are on the rota the fewer number of times any one person is required to assist.
With regard to the cleaning rota, there are two cleaning teams and between them they clean the church once a fortnight, usually on a Friday morning. Therefore each team is required to clean once a month for about two hours. If you are not available on a Friday morning but could assist with church cleaning or brass cleaning, please let Caroline know as there are jobs that can be done on other days.
If you would like to know more about what is involved or are willing to put your name down for any of these duties, please speak to Caroline as soon as possible (01371 875753).
