Take a break – you deserve it!

Weather forecasters have promised us the hottest summer on record this year. By the time you read this, we’ll be well into July and have some idea of whether the Mediterranean temperatures have arrived or not! But whether we are basking in glorious sunshine or sheltering under an umbrella, summer provides us with the opportunity for a break.

The pace and stress of life takes its toll both physically and mentally and we need to take a step back and relax. Sometimes it takes a real effort to stop our frenzied activity and switch off. But when we do, it gives us a chance to restore balance and perspective. We also have a chance to read, think and maybe reflect on some of the bigger questions. What are my real priorities in life? Am I going to do anything about my anxieties and worries? Am I really at peace with myself and my lifestyle?

Jesus lived a busy, tiring and stressful life, always giving of himself to others, having his schedule changed or interrupted and facing frequent opposition and confrontation. At times he seemed emotionally and physically drained. But even he took time off, going up into the hills to be alone and to pray. He knew how important it was to look after his inner self and cultivate his relationship with God his Father.

We are very concerned these days about looking after our bodies – eating healthy food, working out in the gym or enhancing our appearance through various beauty treatments. We must look good on the beach! Don’t get me wrong, respect for the body is a good and important thing but we must also remember to look after our inner selves. Give your inner self a break this summer.

If you’re about to go on holiday, have a great time – you deserve it!
