Bellringers

Report to the APCM to be held at 8 pm on 26th April 2007
  • The bells have been rung for six weddings since this time last year, with rotas organised by Gaynor Potter. Another ten weddings are scheduled to take place by October 2007, though it is not known if they all will require the bells to be rung.

  • Five visiting bands, two peal bands and three quarter-peal bands came to ring. The Essex Ringing School also came as usual.

  • Thanks are due to all the officers of the tower, Gaynor Potter for organising the ringing rotas for the weddings, and the Ringing Master Stuart Gilbert for organising the ringing on practice nights. Also thanked are the various people who now maintain the bells and the ropes in the absence of a formal Tower Keeper. Last year ringing did not progress as well as in previous years mainly due to fewer people being available on practice nights. Also after some years of valuable help from Adrian Malton, Marian and Peter Woods, and Sarah and Nick Holland, they were no longer able to attend on Tuesday evenings due to other commitments. However, they are thanked for all the help they have given us.

  • It was with great sadness that the death is reported of Dr. Lewis Castleden, who was a long term ringer at St. Mary's until ill-health forced him to stop ringing. Even then he occasionally rang for a few minutes before 9.00 Sunday services until a year or two ago. He inspired and encouraged several generations of ringers in his gentle but enthusiastic and knowledgeable way, and is greatly missed by the ringing community as well as the church in general. It was most fitting that a band led by Adrian Malton was able to perform a quarter peal of Double Norwich (one of his favourite methods) in his honour on the day of his funeral, 8th November 2006..

  • The bells themselves, the clappers, and the stays appear to be in good condition at present. A new set of ropes with pre-stretched polyester tops from Ellis Ropes Ltd. finally arrived in July 2006, and was paid for by the church Bell Fund. Thanks are due to Michael Mills and his colleague Roy who took down the old ropes and installed the new ones.

  • At the Bellringers' AGM held on 15th February 2006, our Ringing Master reported :

"Attracting new ringers (and keeping them) is always a problem and unfortunately none of the learners from last year continued on into this year. However, recently some young people from the Church youth group have shown an interest and have started to learn.

I would like to thank, as always, those regulars from other towers who help out on Tuesdays and Sundays especially Reg Dixon, John Gilbert and Dick Hughes.

This year in an attempt to keep the 8 bell ringing going we are now aiming to have an 8 bell practice once a month and hopefully we will get assistance from Marian and Peter and ringers from other towers. These practices will usually be the last Tuesday of the month.

I hope that next year we will be able to improve on those methods we know and perhaps learn some new ones."

  • The continued attendance of people from the Stebbing tower and from the Rodings on Sunday mornings, Tuesday practices and at special services is much appreciated. The tower is indebted to them for their continued attendance.

  • The Bellringers would like to thank the Vicar and the PCC for their continued support, and are happy to be able contribute to the worship of God in such a public and audible manner.
